"Amazing. Upgrading from a year with Powermatic 4+ which is fantastic for the value. But this PM5 blows everything else up. Yes, it’s expensive, but your personal time is worth something in this.
Typically, my PM4+ would take me 2.5 hours to load a carton. The PM5 is a little over an hour, so cutting my load time in half is outstanding. The grinders and consistency of the same automagic packing every time is amazing. I used to have occasional problems with the butt having a gap that wants to drop the cherry too soon. This machine is precision compared to my dirty fingers pressing a guess of pressure into a chute. Don’t worry about the cost. If you already have a machine, this will definitely increase your efficiency. If you’re just starting out, really think about the time investment to make your weekly habit for yourself and saving thousands of dollars per year.
Notes:
Kings only through the tube hopper. No problem for me for the convenience. Apparently 100s can be done manually but that’s dumb.
I wish the tobacco chamber was larger. If you stuff it too full you will have multiple “hopper” errors. Easy fix, just fluff up the tobacco with a stick and let it purge one cycle. Shoot for about 15 auto cigarettes before you need any intervention.
I am simply amazed at how much easier the PM5 would be to beginners. The technique and hand packing of manual packing machines is still something I struggle with after 80 cartons on the PM4+.
